JSW Ampstar Electric Commercial Vehicles Plant Details

The manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar has an annual production capacity of approximately 15,000 vehicles and JSW anticipates the capacity will be expanded to produce 25,000 vehicles. The plant will include integrated battery systems and an automated truck cabin production line.

Both of the showcased vehicles have an average price of approximately ₹80 lakh. This figure refers to the average price of the showcased electric bus and truck and is not a single price for the entire Ampstar range.

Electric Buses and Trucks

Ampstar’s electric bus portfolio will range from 7 metres to 18 metres and is planned for school, city and intercity applications.

On the truck side, Ampstar will initially unveil a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, followed by tippers, fixed-body trucks and dumpers.

Customer will be able to specify power configurations from 150 kW to 500 kW and the company will offer different ownership and operating models, including outright purchase, leasing and Battery as a Service (BaaS).

JSW Targets Internal and External Commercial Vehicle Customers

JSW anticipates initially selling Ampstar vehicles to internal JSW Group companies as well as to their external customers. According to the company, approximately 10,000 commercial vehicles within the JSW Group could be replaced by Ampstar vehicles.

JSW Greentech expects to sell between 500 to 1,000 units in its first year. The company has indicated a target of 5,000-7,000 units in the next phase and plans to reach 75 percent plant capacity utilisation within five years.

JSW anticipates the factory has the ability to generate a top line of approximately ₹12,000 crore in its stated production potential. This is a company target and should not be deemed revenue achieved.

Electric Commercial Vehicle Market and Localisation

JSW’s entrée comes as India’s electric commercial vehicle market continues to grow. According to the Moneycontrol report, India’s electric-bus market grew 40 percent year-on-year in the first half of 2026, with registration of nearly 3,000 units.

According to an IMARC forecast cited by Moneycontrol, the electric-bus market in India was estimated at around ₹3,650 crore in 2025 and is forecast to reach about $2.06 billion by 2034.

JSW has tested electric-trucks through its cement business. According to Parth Jindal, the company found that electric-trucks on certain routes cost ₹465 per tonne, including the higher upfront cost compared to ₹580 per tonne diesel trucks. This represents a difference of ₹115 per tonne on the routes tested by the company.

Localisation is another part of the Ampstar strategy. JSW Greentech said its electric buses currently have 75 percent localisation, with components other than battery and motor sourced from India.

For electric trucks, the company expects to reach 50 percent localisation within six months and 75 percent within nine to 12 months.

JSW Group entered the automotive sector in late 2023 through its partnership with SAIC Motor in MG Motor India. The partnership was followed by the formation of JSW MG Motor India, which operates the MG passenger vehicle business in India.

With Ampstar, JSW is now furthering its presence in the automotive sector, now covering electric commercial vehicles, in buses and multiple truck applications.
