Indian auto sales festive demand and low dealer inventory in 2026
India’s automobile industry is set for the 2026 festive season with robust customer demand, but automakers and dealers are in for a different challenge of limited vehicle inventory. Strong bookings could see higher sales during Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali, but supply constraints might hold manufacturers back on the demand. The second major phase of the festive season will be from Navratri on October 11 through Diwali on November 10. This period is especially critical for the auto industry as it typically accounts for about one-third of annual vehicle sales.

Maruti Suzuki Has Over 2 Lakh Pending Bookings

Maruti Suzuki is facing one of the clearest signs of strong demand. The country’s largest carmaker has more than 2 lakh pend bookings and its dealer network currently has inventory equivalent to around 16 days of sales.

This is significantly below the roughly one month of stock that Maruti Suzuki typically maintains during the festive period. The company has suggested that building inventory remains a challenge and won’t see a full month’s stock before December.

Maruti Suzuki’s sales have grown around 35 percent so far in the current financial year and the industry has seen around 30 percent growth between April and August the report said.

Vehicle Availability Could Limit Festive Sales

Automakers are entering the festive season with healthy bookings but the production and inventory could determine how much of the demand becomes actual retail sales.

Industry executives, cited by The Economic Times, said vehicle availability is likely to become an important factor during October and November. Manufacturing days can also be reduced during the festive period, making it harder for manufacturers to build up stocks quickly.

The festive calendar is also more spread out this year as Onam was celebrated in August, Ganesh Chaturthi in September and Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali fall mainly during October and November. Last year, several of the festivals were crammed in October and a year-on-year comparison is not so straightforward.

Hyundai Increasing Production Capacity

Hyundai Motor India is entering the second half of the festive season with around four to five weeks of inventory and is also advancing the commissioning of a third shift at it Talegaon plant in Maharashtra.

The extra production capacity is being readied up for the launch of a new midsize SUV scheduled for next month, while Hyundai is expecting industry growth to moderate in the second half of the financial year due to a high comparison base.

Tata Motors Expects Festive Retail Sales to Remain Higher

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles expects its retail sales during the festive season to remain higher than last year but the company expects the year-on-year percentage to moderate due to the unusually high base set up by the GST rate cut implemented in September 2025.

The company remains optimistic about festive demand, but expects the growth rate to be influenced by last year’s strong performance.

EV Supply Constraints Also Emerging

Supply constraints are reportedly more noticeable in the battery-electric vehicle segment. Dealers have seen increased demand for EVs following changes in fuel prices and consumer interest in alternative powertrains.

Meanwhile, India’s passenger vehicle market is also undergoing a shift in powertrain preferences and recent industry data showed robust growth across petrol, CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles, offering buyers more options ahead of the festive season.

August Auto Sales Show Strong Demand

Demand momentum coming into the festive season follows a strong August for India’s automobile industry. Passenger vehicle sales hit 4,39,309 units in August 2026, representing a 36.5 percent year-on-year increase, according to SIAM data cited by The Economic Times.

Two-wheeler sales also jumped 10.5 percent to more than 2.03 million units while three-wheeler sales grew 23 percent to 93,764 units. August saw the highest-ever sales for passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers for the month.

What to Expect From the 2026 Festive Auto Season

The 2026 festive season is starting with healthy bookings but vehicle availability could become the deciding factor for actual sales. Maruti Suzuki’s large order backlog is a good sign of the gap between demand and available stock.

Automakers are responding by increasing production and adding manufacturing capacity, but the industry still faces a high comparison base after strong sales during last year’s GST-led demand revival.

As Navratri and Diwali roll around, the balance between customer demand, production capacity and dealer inventory will come to bear on India’s festive auto sales performance.
