Suzuki is developing a new direct-injection turbo-petrol engine for India as part of its powertrain development strategy. The new engine, code-named DITC in Suzuki’s technical briefing, is being developed for growth markets including India, with the company aiming to combine stronger performance with reduced fuel consumption.

Suzuki has not yet revealed the engine’s displacement, power output or first application. This project is part of a wider strategy that includes petrol engines, hybrids, electric vehicles, CNG and biogas-based technologies for different markets.

Suzuki Turbo Petrol Engine Development for India

Suzuki’s new turbo-petrol engine is being developed with direct injection and turbocharging. Suzuki has designated the DITC engine as one of its technologies for future vehicles and has specifically named India among the markets targeted for this project.

The company has not yet released production specifications. Therefore, the engine’s displacement, maximum power, torque, compatible transmission and launch timeline remain unconfirmed.

Suzuki Targets 50% Thermal Efficiency

Suzuki is also working to increase the thermal efficiency of its internal-combustion engines towards 50%. Suzuki’s current research begins from an engine thermal-efficiency level of around 40%. The company defines thermal efficiency as the amount of energy from fuel that an engine can convert into useful mechanical power.

Suzuki’s research builds on its work with the Z12E engine and studies ways to reduce energy losses from engine cooling and exhaust, internal friction and the energy required to draw air into the engine.

Lean combustion, waste-heat recovery and reduced-viscosity engine oil are among the technologies Suzuki is studying. However, the company has not yet confirmed which of these technologies would be used in the production version of the DITC turbo-petrol engine.

Suzuki’s Multi-Powertrain Strategy

The development of a new petrol engine comes as Suzuki expands its work on hybrid and electric powertrains. The company has stated that different markets have different energy supplies, infrastructure and customer requirements. Suzuki therefore plans to adopt multiple powertrain technologies instead of following a single approach.

For India, Suzuki continues to work with CNG and biogas technologies alongside petrol, hybrid and electric vehicles. The company has also announced technologies such as series-hybrid systems and its new Super Ene Charge hybrid system as part of its future powertrain portfolio.

The new turbo-petrol engine could provide another petrol powertrain option for future Maruti Suzuki models in India. However, there is currently no confirmed information about which Maruti Suzuki vehicle will receive the engine first.

What the New Suzuki Engine Means for India

India is an important part of Suzuki’s future global manufacturing strategy. Suzuki plans to strengthen India as a manufacturing and export hub and is targeting annual production capacity of around 4 million vehicles from fiscal 2030 onward.

The new DITC turbo-petrol engine will form part of Suzuki’s broader approach of offering market-specific powertrains. The company can combine internal-combustion engines with hybrid and other technologies according to local requirements.
