New guidelines for Smartphone Screen Protectors for India will be rolled out from April 1, 2027. The government has placed Glass Screen Protectors for cell phones in mandatory BIS registration category. Effective from the date of publication, all relevant screen protectors have to meet the IS 19348:2025 standard which lays down the specifications for quality, strength and other protective properties.

The new BIS Rule will come into effect on April 1, 2027

Smartphone screen protector added to the Compulsory Registration Order, 2021 by Amendment of SEPTEMBER 21, 2026 by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The new rules will go into effect on 1st April 2027. Product manufacturers and/or importers will be required to comply with the prescribed requirements.

Which BIS Standard will apply

This new framework sets IS 19348:2025 as a requirement for smartphone screen protectors. The standard is called “Glass Screen Protector — Specification” and provides requirements on quality, size and strength of the screen protector.

More Features Covered Under the Standard

IS 19348:2025 does not just deal with the glass that’s part of the screen protector. Some components and features included in the standard are adhesives, anti-shatter films, oleophobic coatings, anti-glare coatings. The requirement to features like blue-light filtering and privacy layers are also included in the standard.
